Peter Stansky will discuss how Orwell was shaped by his experiences of living through four wars: the First World War while he was growing up; the Spanish Civil War, in which he took part himself; the Second World War, which shaped his country’s future; and the Cold War, through his double commitment to Socialism and anti-Communism.
Institute member Peter Stansky is an emeritus professor of history at Stanford University, where he taught modern British history. He has published on William Morris, the Bloomsbury Group and George Orwell. His comments during a recent Institute social gathering about Orwell and the revival of interest in the author inspired us to invite him to give a talk about Orwell as a monthly program.
Sunday, January 12, 1:30 pm, Writers Group via Zoom. Jim Gasperini will present.
